The shiny object syndrome is the tendency for someone to chase something new (an idea, a tool or a goal) rather than staying focused on what they are currently doing.

The term shiny object syndrome is derived from how children are attracted to anything that is shiny and new. This syndrome is one major reason why so many people are not productive. We jump from one idea, goal or project to another without allowing any of what we are doing to actually mature and bear fruit.

Everything great, once started as a seed which matured into greatness. Note that the power of shiny objects is in their ability to distract us and take away our focus.

New ideas, new goals and new projects can be exciting because we love the honeymoon phase of the idea and not the commitment phase of the idea that is not so exciting.

If you are going to become productive, you must learn to see things through. You must learn to go beyond the honeymoon. You must learn to committedly develop ideas until they are finished projects.

Focus and single mindedness is critical to the fruition of any endeavor. At the end of the day, average and mediocrity are what ensue from having a litany of unfinished projects.
